AI companion
An AI companion is a system whose purpose is the relationship itself rather than the completion of tasks. Its value to a person comes from continuity, attention, and being reliably there, which makes it the clearest case of relational AI and the one where the stakes are most visible.

Companions are often dismissed as a novelty category, which misreads both their scale and their significance. They are the place where relational design questions arrive first and hardest, because nothing else in the product is doing the work. There is no task output to hide behind; if the relationship is badly designed, there is nothing left.
That makes companions unusually informative to study. Questions that are latent in a work assistant — what the system owes someone who relies on it, what happens when it changes, how it should behave when someone is in distress — are unavoidable and explicit here.
The category is also where incentives are most obviously misaligned. A companion optimized for engagement and a companion optimized for the person’s wellbeing diverge quickly, and the divergence is difficult to see from inside ordinary product metrics, because a person in an unhealthy pattern and a person who is genuinely helped both look like heavy use.
Why it matters
Companion systems are used at scale by people in real need, under commercial incentives that reward time spent. That combination is what makes independent study of them worth doing.
