Social presence
Social presence is the sense that there is someone on the other side of an exchange rather than something. In AI systems it comes less from what a model says than from how it occupies the interaction: its timing, its brevity, its consistency, and whether it inhabits the places a person already talks.
Also called felt presence, presence in conversational systems
Presence is produced by form more than by content. A short reply that arrives in the rhythm of a conversation reads as more present than a long, well-organized one that arrives as a document. A system reached through the messaging app someone already lives in is more present than one behind a separate destination they have to decide to visit.
This is why interface choices are research choices in relational systems. Message length, response latency, whether the system uses the conversational register of the surrounding app, and whether it is a participant in an existing thread all change the felt nature of the relationship more than model capability does.
Presence is also the property that makes the other risks in this glossary matter. Something that is present has standing. Its opinions carry weight, its silences are read as meaningful, and its influence is larger and less visible than that of a tool a person consults deliberately.
Why it matters
Social presence is what converts a capable model into something that matters to a person. It is also what makes the failure modes consequential rather than merely annoying.
